OUR SERVICES
Educational Therapy
Educational therapy is individualized, skills-based support that focuses on how a student learns, not simply completing assignments. It combines targeted academic instruction with therapeutic learning strategies to address the underlying learning processes that can interfere with progress, including cognitive and processing factors that impact reading, writing, math, and language development.
Unlike tutoring, which typically emphasizes subject content, educational therapy emphasizes skill development and strategy use. The goal is to strengthen academic foundations, build effective learning habits, and increase confidence when school has been challenging or discouraging.
Rather than reteaching content, educational therapy builds:
- Reading Skill Development: Decoding, fluency, spelling, and reading stamina.
- Writing Support: Idea organization, sentence structure, written expression, and editing supports.
- Math Foundations and Reasoning: Number sense, computation, and multi-step problem solving.
- Language Comprehension: Vocabulary, complex sentence structures, abstract concepts, and oral and written language.
- Phonemic Awareness: Hearing, identifying, and manipulating individual sounds in spoken words.
- Auditory Processing Skills: Supporting how the brain interprets and organizes sound and speech.
- Visual Processing Skills: Supporting how the brain interprets visual information, including patterns, symbols, and spatial relationships.
- Metacognitive Training: Self-monitoring, self-questioning, strategy selection, adjusting approaches to academic tasks.
Why Choose Educational Therapy?
- Target Underlying Learning Barriers: Addresses skill gaps and learning-related factors that contribute to academic difficulty.
- Provides Specialized, Evidence-Based Instruction: Provided by a trained educational specialist using structured, research-informed methods tailored to specific learning differences.
- Increases Confidence and Motivation: Reduces frustration and helps learners rebuild momentum, resilience, and a more positive self-concept as capable students.
- Improves Alignment with School Supports: Coordinates with caregivers and, when appropriate, teachers and school teams so strategies, accommodations, and goals are reinforced across settings.
- Strengthens Self-Advocacy: Helps students understand their learning needs and communicate effectively so they can access the right supports.
- Supports Appropriate Across Ages: Supports K–12 learners and can also support college students and adults with learning disabilities who want skill remediation and stronger learning strategies.
What is the Process for Educational Therapy?
- Initial Consultation: The process starts with a complimentary consultation to discuss concerns, goals, and learning history.
- Documentation Review and Planning: Relevant documentation is reviewed, including a psychoeducational or psychological evaluation report that documents a learning disability, IEP/504 plans, and teacher or school feedback. Based on the learner’s strengths and challenges, a targeted plan is developed with clear priorities and goals.
- Ongoing Targeted Instruction: Regular sessions provide structured, skills-based instruction with direct teaching and guided practice in the learner’s highest-impact areas. Instruction is individualized and adjusted over time based on performance and progress.
- Progress Evaluation and Collaboration: Progress is monitored using session-based skill data, practical benchmarks, and school indicators when applicable. Caregiver check-ins are provided as appropriate, and coordination with school supports or other professionals occurs when helpful to reinforce strategies across settings.
Who Can Benefit from Educational Therapy?
Educational therapy is designed for learners with a formal Learning Disorder diagnosis who need structured, skills-based instruction:
- Dyslexia / SLD-Reading: challenges with decoding, spelling, and reading fluency.
- Dysgraphia / SLD-Writing: challenges with handwriting, spelling, and written expression.
- Dyscalculia / SLD-Math: challenges with number sense, calculations, and multi-step problem solving.
- Twice-exceptional (2e): gifted-range strengths paired with a documented learning disorder. Strong abilities may compensate for skill gaps in early grades, with challenges becoming more noticeable as academic demands increase.
