Meet Chauncey Cody, BA – Neurofeedback Specialist at Cognitive Solutions LC
How did you first learn about neurofeedback, and what drew you to it?
I first learned about neurofeedback briefly during my psychology classes during undergrad. However, I got more familiar with it as I began job searching. I was drawn to neurofeedback because it is another way to treat and aid the symptoms of mental health disorders without medication. I have always been interested in factual and science backed alternatives to medication, and this job has been great exposure to that! I also find it a great blend of neuroscience and psychology.
Can you tell us about your background and how it led you to this position?
I have my bachelor’s in psychology and human services from DePaul University. I had lots of experience as a peer mentor and internships with licensed clinicians in private practice and behavioral health. I am passionate about working with those who have mood disorders and have experienced trauma, especially from marginalized communities. I was drawn to this position because of the hands-on experience I have gained from working with clients of many different backgrounds and beliefs and helping them get closer to their goals.
What do you find most rewarding about being a neurofeedback technician?
The most rewarding thing about being a neurofeedback technician is seeing progress made with all of our clients and building relationships with them. Clients continue to show me that positive change is possible no matter how young or old you are.
How has your understanding of the brain and behavior evolved since starting this work?
My understanding of the brain and behavior has truly evolved since starting this work. I always knew that the brain is elastic, but I have a much better understanding of the science behind how and why your brain learns and grows. It is much clearer to me that anyone who is committed to self-improvement is capable and your brain, no matter how much it has endured, will follow suit.
When you’re not helping clients, how do you like to spend your time?
When not helping clients, I enjoy watching women’s sports (live or on TV), taking walks, volunteering, spending time with my friends and my cat, cooking, and attending curated DJ events.
What’s a fun or surprising fact most people don’t know about you?
I am pretty allergic to cats although I have one, and surprisingly not allergic to dogs!
If you could instantly master any new skill, what would it be and why?
If I could master any skill instantly, it would be playing chess. I’ve always wanted to learn how to play because I grew up playing checkers. Chess feels complicated to me but also seems like a very fun game of strategy.
