What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD or ADHD)?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD ADHD) is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and often persists into adulthood. ADD ADHD includes some combination of problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. Executive functioning difficulties are often prevalent in those with ADD ADHD. Children and adults with ADD ADHD also may struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor performance in school.
At Cognitive Solutions Learning Center, we take a highly unique, individualized, research based approach to the testing and treatment of Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD or ADHD). Our approach is based on two decades of research and clinical experience into the most effective and medicine free treatments for a lifetime of improved focus and brain function.
Frequently, doctors will evaluate a patient for Attention Deficit Disorders through the use of an interview and some screening measures or questionnaires. While this process can be useful in determining if a condition is present, it does little to help an adult patient or a child and their family understand how they think or learn. Further most patients, children included, are recommended therapy and psycho-stimulant medications as their primary treatment options. This lack of thorough testing of cognitive and processing abilities, combined with the limited scope of intervention, often leaves patients and their families/caregivers frustrated with the lack of long term improvement.
When testing a child or adult for difficulties with attention, it is important to understand the whole picture of how the individual’s brain processes, stores, and uses information. Most individuals who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD or ADHD) have difficulties with executive functioning, including time management, organization, task initiation, self-monitoring, and self-regulation. This can extend to regulation of the body, the focus, or emotional states. These difficulties can impact both children and adults in a range of settings, and it is important to understand how to strengthen any underlying areas of brain processing deficiency. Through comprehensive psychoeducational or neuropsychological tests, it is possible to better understand the extent and impact of Attention Deficit Disorder, as well as develop a targeted and highly effective intervention plan.
The specialists at Cognitive Solutions Learning Center focus on teaching the brain to use more efficient pathways. We use research based strategies to help our patients develop stronger executive functioning skills, working memory, and self-regulation. We work with patients to improve their diet, exercise, mindfulness, and sleep habits, while using interventions such as neurofeedback, talk therapy, and executive functions tutoring. Our primary focus is on changing the underlying brain pathways leading to the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder, striving for optimal brain function for the long term without the use of psycho-stimulant medications.
